THE GRATEFUL DEAD: Fillmore West (San Francisco, CA) Aug 21, 1968 One of the most revered performance runs of this era occurred in August of 1968 with a three night series of concerts at San Francisco's Fillmore West, followed by a pair of shows at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium. Indeed, the last night at the Shrine (August 24, 1968) was deemed so incendiary that it would become the Two From the Vault release decades later, when the band first began releasing peak performance recordings from their vast archive. Presented here is the second set from the second night of the Fillmore West run, occurring three nights prior, featuring a performance that is nearly as impressive. Capturing the band after the release of the Anthem of the Sun album, but several months prior to the Live/Dead album recordings from early the following year...

 

Jean-Luc Ponty: Avery Fisher Hall (New York, NY) Jul 4, 1974
For this show, Ponty played unaccompanied, alternating between three violins, one an electric instrument that was fed through wah-wah and delay pedals. And while his three lengthy improvisations were unnamed, some of the soaring, swooping motifs and striking echo lines heard here would later manifest on his recordings as a leader. Shortly after this performance, Ponty would embark on a career as a bandleader in his own right, which kicked off with the January, 1975 release of Upon the Wings of Music, the first of several hard-hitting fusion offerings for the Atlantic label.

The Crusaders: Avery Fisher Hall (New York, NY) Jul 4, 1974 They come out of the gate charging hard with the funky "Stomp and Buck Dance," lead track from Southern Comfort. Grounded by Stix Hooper's slamming backbeat and Joe Sample's churchy comping on Wurlitzer electric piano, this earthy offering has the feel of James Brown's backing band, particularly in the tight lines between trombonist Wayne Henderson and tenor saxophonist Wilton Felder, recalling the indelible hookup between Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis of the JBs. Carlton provides some bluesy string-bending
